NCET Eligibility (Exam vs Programme) — Read This Before You Choose Subjects

Prep NCET is built By IITians. Use this page to understand the difference between appearing for NCET and getting admission to ITEP at institutions such as selected IIT/NIT/RIE campuses and Central/State Universities.

NCET (Exam) Eligibility

Who can take the exam?

  • Educational status: Students who have passed or are appearing in Class XII (10+2) or equivalent from a recognised board.
  • Age: Typically, no explicit upper age limit is prescribed for the exam itself. (Institutions may have programme-specific rules.)
  • Subjects: You will choose 2 languages and 3 domain subjects during application, plus attempt the General Test and Teaching Aptitude.
  • Documents for application: Recent passport photo, signature, valid ID details, category/PwBD certificates (if applicable), and fee payment details.

What the exam eligibility does NOT guarantee: Clearing NCET makes you eligible to be considered. Admission is decided by the institute based on its programme rules, seat matrix, category quotas, and counselling schedule.

Programme Eligibility (Institute Rules)

Every recognised ITEP institution publishes its own programme-wise prerequisites. These commonly include:

  1. Subject prerequisites at Class XII (e.g., PCM/PCB for B.Sc. B.Ed.; humanities/social sciences for B.A. B.Ed.; commerce subjects for B.Com. B.Ed.).
  2. Minimum marks % and relaxation rules per category.
  3. Age conditions (some institutions may specify a lower/upper age on the programme).
  4. Reservation & domicile policies as per Government/University norms.

B.Sc. B.Ed. (Secondary)PCM or PCB (as per target stream)Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics/Biology + 2 LanguagesBest fit for science-focused ITEP at IIT/NIT/RIE-type campuses.
B.A. B.Ed. (Middle/Secondary)Humanities/Social Sciences in XIIHistory/Geography/Political Science/Economics (pick 3) + 2 LanguagesChoose domains matching your desired teaching specialisation.
B.Com. B.Ed.Commerce in XII (Accountancy, Business, Economics)Accountancy, Business Studies, Economics + 2 LanguagesGreat pathway for Commerce + Teaching careers.

Action: Before finalising subjects in the NCET form, open the prospectus/notice of your target institute and verify: subject prerequisites, % criteria, category relaxations, and any age rule.

Subject Combos for IIT/NIT/RIE Targets

  • Aiming IIT/NIT (B.Sc. B.Ed.): Pick PCM (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) or PCB (for biology-focused tracks) as your 3 domain subjects. Choose language pairs you are confident with (e.g., English + Hindi).
  • Aiming RIE (NCERT) campuses: Check the specific campus programme (e.g., B.A./B.Sc. B.Ed.) and align your three domains accordingly. Humanities track → History/Geo/Polity/Economics; Science track → PCM/PCB.
  • Unsure? Start with your strongest board subjects; confirm institute prerequisites, then lock NCET choices. Avoid “exotic” combos that your target programme doesn’t accept.

Documents You’ll Need (Application → Counselling)

  • Application stage: Photo, signature, valid ID (Aadhaar/Passport/Driving Licence), category/PwBD certificate (if applicable), XII details, fee receipt.
  • Exam day: Admit Card (printed), valid photo ID, any self-declaration if instructed, and simple stationery as permitted.
  • Result & counselling: NCET scorecard, Class X & XII marksheets/certificates, transfer/migration certificate (as asked), category/PwBD/ews certificates, photographs, and institute-specific forms. Keep originals + photocopies + PDFs.
Checklist: Am I eligible for my dream programme?
  1. I meet the NCET exam criteria (XII passed/appearing; valid documents).
  2. I verified my target institute’s programme rules (subjects, % cutoffs, age, reservations).
  3. My NCET subject choices (2 languages + 3 domains) match programme prerequisites.
  4. I have a timeline plan (application, correction, admit card, exam day, answer key, result, counselling).
  5. All documents are scanned and named “YYYY-NCET-doc.pdf”.
